Best Brain Training Games

Do you ever wonder about your brain? Is it getting enough exercise? Has it been trained to think properly? How can one know if one’s brain is working correctly? Cognitive science is dedicated to the study of neural pathways, synapses, and various lobes of the brain. For one to learn everything there is to know about the mind would take years. One would be better suited to attend medical school to become a brain surgeon. There are intriguing books that one can read to better understand the development and functions of the brain.

How can one decide which is the best system for ultimate brain training? One would need to test out various cognitive tools to determine the best one for one’s intended advancement. Each person’s brain is unique. Everyone should design a specific and practical training regiment for oneself that can be maintained. Some people need to improve their logical or reasoning skills, whereas others need to build and maintain memory aptitudes. Depending on the need to shape or reframe one’s thinking process, one will need to structure a method for improvement.
To use one’s time most efficiently one should train one’s brain. But what is the best way to properly condition one’s most vital experiential tool? One’s mind needs to be continuously challenged and finely sculpted, in a similar manner to strengthening and toning one’s muscles. One needs to constantly strive to further broaden one’s mind by developing as many areas of one’s brain as possible. The best mental workout would likely involve interactive activities, which simultaneously requires constant mental exertion and the dexterous employment of one’s hands. This dual core strategy can most adequately be achieved by moderate to complex amusements, such as puzzles and games that are based on logical principles. There are many games from which one can choose.

There are a great variety of systems for enriching one’s mind to the maximum of its capacity. An exhaustive list would at least include: daily crosswords, jumbles, fill-in the blanks phrases, word unscramble games, Sudoku and math puzzles.

Neural science and cognitive development tools can vary. There are various companies that offer solutions for brain training and maximization of one’s cognitive capacity. They each utilize specialized integrative systems and various technologies. One of the most popular brain training services is: Lumosity, which offers brain training through an online subscription service. There are also in-school cognitive development clinics such as: the Arrowsmith Program, in Toronto, Canada. Lumosity seems to be more for developing one’s logical skills, while Arrowsmith clinics appears to empower people to develop new learning strategies to thereby create new connections in the brain.
One can sign up with a brain training clinic online or in-person, or one can benefit from a vast array of brain enriching alternatives. In one’s local paper – on the Internet or in print – one can find diverse options to tease and enhance one’s thinking potential. Here one can find puzzles and number games such as Sudoku.

Sudoku is only one of many math related games that one can utilize for reconfiguring one’s aptitudes. There is a great website that contains math puzzles that can be accessed through this link: kenken.com. As well, there are many great Japanese logic games that one can play: cybermouse.hubpages.com/hub/Logic-Games-Galore. It is, however, best to take lessons before attempting this quagmire of numbers. Many options for Sudoku education are available. There is even so-called Sudoku Professor who will apparently provide seven free initial lessons, after which one will need to pay for tutorials.1 One can also discover a wide library of instructional videos on how to play Sudoku on YouTube. 2 There are even specialized procedures for mastering this game including; an X Wing Column Variation and an X Wing Row Variation, among others. At first glance these techniques for Sudoku might seem almost like crosswords.

Games such as actual crosswords, word find, word solver, and jumbles can be found in one’s local newspaper, as well as online.3 The list of word amusements is almost endless. There are various types of crosswords, from barred to blocked, to cryptograms. “The cryptic clues can be read as a sensible sentence, more or less, but actually consist of two parts. One part gives the definition, as in the standard crossword puzzle, the other uses some form of wordplay that hints at the answer. This wordplay may come in the form of anagrams, charades, container words, reversals, deletions, double definitions, hidden words…”4 Other types of crosswords include:

  • Fill-Ins – these are crosswords without any clues! The word list is provided, given in alphabetical order, but sorted by the number of letters. They only fit on the board one way.

  • Flower Power – these are crosswords in a flower shape. Words intertwine on the puzzle, reading both clockwise and counter clockwise.

  • Anagrams – these are scrambled words you have to unscramble, either with or without clues 🙂

  • Syllacrostic – these puzzles are crossword puzzles, but each square contains a syllable instead of just one letter Logic puzzles – these puzzles give clues to match items based on logic.5

  • One could easily become frustrated when trying to solve a crossword. But there are great websites that offer support, such as unscramble.net, as well as other solutions to one’s crossword conundrum. 6

  • Word Find is another fun pastime where one needs to find a word in a mishmash of letters within a quadrant. Word Solver is another fun puzzle whereby one rearranges a set of letters into a set of anagrams.7 Perhaps palindromes could also be included in this game.8 This sorting of letters might seem disorderly. Most of these scrambled word games, including crosswords are probably based on the originator of word forming games – Scrabble. 9

  • Jumbles are also a great way to broaden one’s thinking capacity. These brain-teasing riddles are a lot of fun. The best free jumble website I discovered is maintained by The Ledger.com online newspaper. It can be viewed on this link: www.uclick.com/client/llf/tmjmf/. One can find a daily jumble in almost all major newspapers and possibly in local papers or magazines.

There is vast array of other mind power games to be discovered on the Internet. Many websites let one play for free. One will, however, have to endure a continuous ensemble of possibly annoying advertisements. From word diversions, such as: Letter Scramble, Spiderman’s Web of Words, to online Chess and Checkers, one can brain train for hours at home. One great website I found while perusing the Internet is wordgames.com. This amusement portal offers many types of games, above and beyond regular word challenges.
The ten best brain games, from my perspective, are the classics.

Zack’s Top Ten Brain Building Picks:

  • 1. Backgammon

  • 2. Checkers

  • 3. Chess

  • 4. Boggle

  • 5. Charades

  • 6. Concentration (games played using regular deck of cards)

  • 7. UNO (special deck card game)

  • 8. Scrabble

  • 9. Solitaire (games played using regular deck of cards)

  • 10. X’s and O’s

Regardless of whatever strategy one utilizes to build one’s brain, one will need to focus on expanding one’s vocabulary. Brain training technologies, systems for growing neural networks, and word games are all helpful for enhancing one’s intellectual capacity. Keeping one’s brain active and regularly filled with new thoughts is imperative for maintaining and maximizing one’s brain. Your brain is your internal computer for processing information about the world. You need to ensure that it is functioning optimally.
